Bride At Rose Arbor

This beautiful bride is waiting to walk down the aisle and is facing a rose arbor.

Her dress is made from white larkspur petals with a fancy purple chrysanthemum petal underlay to show the fullness and movement of her dress. The lace of the blouse is made of individual natural white Queen Anne’s lace florets while her hair is a natural nigella flower. The final touch is a bouquet made cosmos leaf and florets of blue salvia. Off in the distance is an arbor of rue leaves, red baby’s breath florets and red phlox flowers.

“Shelley”

Influenced by a painting by Monet, I imagine a lone woman standing on a rocky cliff waiting for her lover to return.  This piece is dedicated to all the “Shelleys” in our lives who support and encourage us.

To create this image, I have used both floral and botanical materials to tell the story. Look closely and you will find various shades of light blue larkspur petals, the richness of purple larkspur petals, as well as natural white Queen Anne’s lace florets in her dress. Yellow and pink rose petals, yellow Queen Anne’s lace florets, red phlox, and blue baby’s breath complete the woman while pieces of bark and fern stem are the final botanical touches, I added,

Ballerina Soaring

This image of a ballerina demonstrates the grace and beauty of her movement as she soars in the air.

This piece is created by placing thousands of individual petals and florets to capture the movement of the ballerina. Yellow rose petals with an underlay of darker yellow petals make up her dress, while red rose petals and red Queen Anne’s lace florets complete the image.

Ballerina On Pointe

Ballerina On Pointe is an absolute delight of movement and balance.

She graces the stage with red rose petals in her dress, with darker red rose petals as an underlay to create movement. Yellow rose petals reflect both grace and strength in her arms and legs. Pink rose petals, yellow baby’s breath florets, and pieces of bark complete the image.

Blue Ballet Dancer

This individual ballet dancer captures both grace and strength in his movement using hundreds of petals, florets, and leaves. I can just imagine the height and distance this ballet dancer attains as he leaps across the stage.

The tights of the ballet dancer are the darker petals of blue larkspur while his shirt is done in the lighter petals. Finishing the piece are yellow rose petals for his arms, red baby’s breath florets for his hair and high mountain silver stem leaves for his shoes.

Principal Dancers

My research for this piece continued to return me to this famous pose from the ballet “Giselle”. I am drawn to the poise, grace and movement that ballet dancers can portray but I know that comes after many years of study and practice. I think I was first enraptured with ballet when my neighbour and childhood friend studied with the National School of Ballet. Here the Principal Dancers move into position and hold this pose for a moment before the ballet continues.

The ballerina stands on pointe shoes of pink rose petals with just a hint of white chrysanthemum florets. Her dress is underlaid with dark yellow rose petals and it is completed with yellow rose petals. The bodice of her dress is made of lighter yellow rose petals, while her arms and legs are red rose petals. The leggings of the ballet dancer are lighter blue larkspur petals, and his shirt is the darker blue larkspur petals with touches of white Queen Anne’s Lace. His ballet shoes are made from high mountain silver stem leaves while red rose petals complete his wrist and hand. Finally, these dancers are standing on a floor of bark and their hair is red baby’s breath florets.

In The Field

This red and white hound is roaming through a field searching for luck. Can you find it?

The hound is created using white larkspur petals and 5 variations in colour of cosmos sulphureus petals. Accents of burplerium petals for the eyes and nose complete the dog.

The taller trees in the background are high mountain silver stem leaves with rue leaves for the bushes. Tamarack and cassia stems with overlaying wild grass create the field. And there is the four-leaf clover in the bottom left corner.

An African Watering Hole

This piece began with the idea that I would include only those animals that come together at one time at a watering hole in Africa. Seven months later I completed this piece and showed it to two women who had both been to South Africa. To my delight they both exclaimed, “I was there, and I saw this exact scene!”

This artwork is presented on specialty paper with its fibers enhanced, over Arches watercolour paper. The trees and bushes in the background consist of red Japanese maple, high mountain silver stem and rue leaves. Completing the background, I used a cosmos sunset flower for the sun, borago petals for the water, bark for the shoreline and islands, and caspia for the grasses.

Yellow rose petals, squirrel foot fern leaves, and burplerium petals were used for the lion which is hiding behind separate pieces of caspia. The crocodiles lurking in the water were created from rabbit’s foot fern and burplerium petals. Burplerium petals, white chrysanthemums and rabbit’s foot fern were used for the elephants. For the giraffe, I used cosmos sulphureus and orange chrysanthemums, with accents of white chrysanthemums, rabbit’s foot fern and flat fern. The little birds perched on the giraffes were created using rabbit’s foot fern. Finally this piece is made complete with zebras using white chrysanthemums and rabbit’s foot fern.

Loon And Chick

The call of the loon echoes across the waterways in Northern Ontario. Whether I have been camping, cottaging, or staying at my favourite fishing lodge, the sound of this amazing bird is always welcome. This piece is a combination of both traditional pressed flower art and the use of floral and botanical materials to “paint” my pieces.

The marsh is created using snake weed, silver lace vine, broom grass, and stems of blue salvia. Cosmos leaf, black vanilla grass and bark complete the shoreline. Dark blue chrysanthemum petals reflect the current in the water.

For the body of the adult loon, I used blue verbena, white marguerite, and blue pansy petals. Flat fern, red Japanese maple leaves and pieces of white marguerite petals complete the accents on the loon. Blue daisy petals with accents of flat fern and red Japanese maple leaves were used for the baby chick.

Great Blue Heron Takes Flight

As this majestic bird rises out of the marshes, one can almost hear the sound of its flapping wings. The heron and the marsh grasses are in striking contrast to the trees and clouds in the distance. This piece is a combination of both traditional pressed flower art and the use of floral and botanical materials to “paint” my piece.

The marsh is created using snake weed, broom grass, and mountain wild cat. Rose leaves and natural blue hydrangea complete the trees and clouds.

For the body of the heron, I used florets of white marguerite, dark blue chrysanthemum and blue daisy. Petals of yellow larkspur and burplerium, as well as pieces of flat fern provide accents..

Robin In A Tree

Nothing represents Spring or new beginnings like a robin and I always look forward to seeing my first one.

This artwork is created using fall oak leaves for the brown wings, head and back of the robin. Using shades of cosmos sulphureus brings out the breast of this striking bird. Touches of red Japanese maple, white chrysanthemum and yellow larkspur make it complete.

The tree is created using rombus fern pieces layered to add texture

Flamingo Family

I wanted to create a piece of artwork that captures the beauty and grace of this majestic bird, while doing justice to their long flowing feathers. The pink colouration of the adults is acquired through the sifting of minerals while they eat and so my artwork captures two adults and a young flamingo.

The adults are created using various shades of pink roses with accents of blue daisy. White marguerite florets and light rose petals capture the young flamingo with touches of blue daisy completing the image.

Cosmos leaf represents the palms hanging down, while light blue chrysanthemum florets capture the blue green of the ocean and fall oak leaves make up the beach.

Alpaca

There is something endearing about the alpaca with its toothy grin, mop top hair and puffy cheeks.

To achieve dimension in its cheeks, I layered archival paper under the leaves. This is a technique that I am exploring to put more depth and texture in my artwork.

The alpaca is created using silver leaves which have unique colour variations. The darker areas around the eyes, inside of the ears and nose are created using the reverse side of these leaves. Accents of burplerium were used for the eye and mouth, with white marguerite petals for its cute front tooth complete the face, The top knot is created by layering, layering and more layering of Japanese red maple leaves using both sides of the leaves for texture.

Woodpeckers Of Ontario

Growing up, I hiked through the fields and woods around my home and in local conservation areas. It was during one of these walks when I became fascinated by the pileated woodpecker. This artwork is my largest and most challenging piece to date. It took me four months to complete and represents a new direction for my artwork-to create a story in a story. The trees, river, sky and sun provide a delightful background and natural habitat to place the woodpeckers.

The red headed woodpecker is made of white marguerite florets, boronia and blue pansy petals. The pileated and downy woodpeckers were created using petals of blue daisy, red daisy and blue verbena, with florets of white marguerite completing the images. Flat fern was used for the beaks and feet of the adult birds, while high mountain silver stem was used for the fledglings poking out of the nest.

Pressed bark was layered to reflect the texture and complexity of trees. The forest is made from layering rain tree, natural Japanese maple and silver leaves, surrounding a river of blue daisy petals. Natural blue hydrangea and yellow cosmos sulphureus complete the sky.

Cheltenham Badlands

This beautiful heritage site is located near Caledon, Ontario. Creating this piece involved sorting through over 500 fall leaves to capture the right shading and undulations of the dunes.

The dunes are created using various shades of fall leaves: ornamental pear, burning bush, and yellow ginkgo, as well as, red daisy florets. Touches of the mountain wildcat flowers represent the wildflowers growing at the edges of the dunes. The trees are created using raintree and rose leaves, and leather leaf ferns. Finishing this piece are natural blue hydrangea petals.
