Bride At Rose Arbor

This beautiful bride is waiting to walk down the aisle and is facing a rose arbor. The image is created by placing approximately 3,000 to 5,000 individual florets, petals, or leaves. The piece was truly a labour of love for about six weeks.

Her dress is made from white larkspur petals with a fancy purple chrysanthemum petal underlay to show the fullness and movement of her dress. The lace of the blouse is made of individual natural white Queen Anne’s Lace florets while her hair is a natural nigella flower. The final touch is a bouquet is made cosmos leaf and florets of blue salvia. Off in the distance is an arbor of rue leaves, red baby’s breath flowers and red phlox florets.

This piece is the first part of my New Collection of larger pieces and throughout these images runs a theme of movement – movement in a dress, dancers, and even how your eye is drawn into the image as you find detail after delightful detail.

“Shelley”

Drawing on a painting by Monet, I imagine a lone woman standing on a rocky cliff waiting for her lover to return. To create this image, I have used both floral and botanical materials to tell the story.

Look closely and you will find various shades of the natural light blue larkspur petals, the richness of the purple larkspur petals, as well as natural white Queen Anne’s lace florets in her dress. Yellow and pink rose petals, yellow Queen Anne’s  flowers, red phlox, and blue baby’s breath almost complete the image. Pieces of bark and fern stem are the final botanical touches I added.

To the friends, professionals and even strangers who have encouraged, supported, and delighted in my work, I thank you. And a special thank you to my friend Shelley, who purchased my first piece.

Pointe Shoes

With a creative nod to the ballerina on point, this piece invites the observer to follow the flow of her dress and feel the strength in her legs. Approximately 5,000 pieces of individual florets, petals, or bark were used; and this piece was completed in about four weeks.

The dress is made of many variations in colour of red rose  petals carefully placed to reflect both movement and perspective. The beautiful edge of the dress is lined with tiny natural white Queen Anne’s Lace florets. Pink and yellow petals are laid flat for her legs and pointe shoes. The ballerina is standing on a floor of bark.

This piece is the first in a series focusing on ballet. Throughout these images runs a theme of movement – movement in a dress, dancers, and even how your eye is drawn into the details of the image.

Ballerina Soaring

Part Two in my Ballet Series, this ballerina is soaring gracefully in air. It demonstrates the grace and beauty of the movement of ballet dancers.

This piece is created by placing thousands of individual petals and florets to capture the movement I imagine. Yellow rose petals with an underlay of darker yellow petals make up her dress, while red rose petals and red Queen Anne’s Lace florets complete the image. Natural petals rather than dyed are used, and cutting to shape is minimal.

Ballet Dancer Leaping In Air

A beautiful image of a ballet dancer leaping in air is created using hundreds of individual petals and florets.

I have used variations in colour and shape of yellow rose petals to add to the sense of movement. Red rose petals and red Queen Anne’s Lace florets complete the image.

This ballet dancer is truly leaping off of the paper.

Ballerina On Pointe

Ballerina On Point is an absolute delight of movement and balance. This ballerina is created by placing thousands of individual petals, florets, and pieces on the image I am working with.

She graces the stage with red rose petals in her dress, with darker red rose petals as an underlay to create movement. Yellow rose petals reflect both grace and strength in her arms and legs. Pink rose petals, yellow baby’s breath florets, and pieces of bark complete the image.

I think she is so stunning, although I enjoy the process of my art coming to life on the paper - just being able to see that I am able to create the sense of movement with a limited palette. I do not dye the materials I work with. I painstakingly choose the right individual piece before placing it on my image.

Blue Ballet Dancer

The final individual ballet dancer in this series captures both grace and strength in his movement using hundreds of petals, florets, and leaves. I can just imagine the height and distance this ballet dancer attains as he leaps across the stage.

The tights of the ballet dancer are the darker petals of blue larkspur while his shirt is done in the lighter petals. Finishing the piece are yellow rose petals for his arms, red baby’s breath florets for his hair and High Mountain Silver Stem leaves for his shoes.

With this piece, I believe I was able to truly capture what I wanted to achieve - grace, strength, and above all movement. For without that, my art does not come alive on the piece of paper.

Principal Dancers

After many weeks of preparation and at times, very long weeks I am pleased to present the final piece in my Ballet Series - “Principal Dancers”. My research for this piece continued to return me to this famous pose from the ballet “Giselle”. Although challenging, I am pleased that the “Principal Dancers” have truly come together in this piece. I imagine them moving into position and holding this pose for a split moment before the ballet continues.

The ballerina stands on pointe shoes of pink rose petals with just a hint of white chrysanthemum. Her dress is underlaid with dark yellow rose  petals and it is completed with yellow rose petals. The bodice of her dress are lighter yellow rose petals, while her arms and legs are red rose petals. The leggings of the ballet dancer are lighter blue larkspur petals and his shirt are the darker blue larkspur petals with touches of white Queen Anne’s Lace. His ballet shoes are made from High Mountain Silver Stem leaves while red rose petals complete his wrist and hand. Finally, these dancers are standing on a floor of bark and their hair is red baby’s breath florets. There are many thousands of petals and florets in this piece.

I am drawn to the poise, grace and movement that ballet dancers are able to show but I know that comes after many years of study and practice. I think I was first enraptured with ballet when my neighbour and childhood friend, studied with the National School of Ballet. Her family took me to one of her year-end recitals. I hope Cathy would enjoy my art.

A View Off Vancouver Island

After many months, I am pleased to introduce this piece. I began with a careful layout of the different images I had in mind of the ways in which we could experience a pod of whales. Then I began the search for just the right paper. I didn’t want a solid blue that would distract from the images of the whales, but I also wanted to capture movement while maintaining the acid free nature of the paper I required. With that in mind I chose a solid blue paper as the backing and laid over it an ivory lace paper that allowed the blue to peek through. Both papers have a high cotton fiber content and are acid free.

Then began the careful process of capturing what one might see if we could look above and below the water surface at the same time, in one snapshot. I think I have captured this in “A View Off Vancouver Island”.

The whales are made using elm, rose, fern, rue, and green leaves. Touches of salvia capture the spray created by whales as they move through water or when they leap naturally into the air.  Natural blue hydrangea, blue hydrangea and pressed bark complete the piece.

Flying Kites

Taking a break from creating images petal by petal, I love creating stories using floral and botanical materials. Here are three boys out flying their kites. I fondly named them “Lumpy, Wally and the Beaver”.

Look closely and you can almost feel the wind blowing in the pine needle trees and the grasses of Mountain Wild Cat and goldenrod leaves. Red and yellow rose petals were used for the boys, while rabbit tail stems and Maidenhair fern leaves make up the kites. Sorry but I wanted three coloured kites so I cheated and used card stock. This is the only time I’ve used something other than floral and botanical materials.

Dried Flower Arrangement

In the fall, I gathered flower heads, stems and remaining foliage from a local garden.  After drying this botanical material, I was struck by the beauty and complexity of what some might consider the dead vestiges of summer. So I created this Fall bouquet but I could use your help identifying the individual pieces of botanical material. Until then, enjoy.

This piece has been sealed with spray sealer to protect the delicacy of the arrangement.

This scene of a polar bear mother and her two cubs measures 8"x10"and is framed under glass.
